Gunpowder Innovations worked with a renewable energy company to build Smart Solar. It is a platform for people who own solar panels, at home or at work. It shows how much energy the system makes, warns when a part stops working, and helps plan repairs.
Before this, owners had to look in many places to understand their system. Now monitoring, reports, alerts, and billing are all in one simple app.
The challenge
More and more people are installing solar panels. But many owners do not know if their system is working well. When a part fails, they often find out weeks later, after they have already lost a lot of energy.
Most monitoring tools only show part of the picture. The data is spread across different screens and is hard to read. Owners cannot easily tell what is normal and what is a problem.
The client wanted one platform that could watch every solar system in real time, find broken equipment on its own, track energy made and energy lost, make repairs easy to plan, show clear reports, and manage user accounts and subscriptions.
What we built
We designed and built a smart solar monitoring platform. It checks each system all day, finds problems early, and shows the results in simple dashboards that anyone can understand.
Live monitoring. Users see energy production, efficiency, and system health as it happens.
Automatic fault detection. The platform finds inverter failures, lost connections, optimiser problems, and panels that make less power than they should.
Energy reports. Users can look back at past performance, see trends, and understand how much energy they made over time.
Maintenance tasks. Service requests and repair schedules are managed in one place, with clear steps for each job.
Alerts. When something goes wrong or a service is due, the platform sends a notification right away.
Subscriptions and billing. Users can manage their plan, payment details, and invoices inside the app.
Two portals. End users and administrators each get their own screens, with access based on their role.

Design approach
Solar data can be confusing. Many tools show too many numbers and technical words. We focused on turning that data into plain information, so users can see what is happening and decide what to do quickly.
We designed for mobile first, because most owners check their system on a phone. Dashboards show only what matters. Charts are clear and easy to compare. Maintenance steps are short. A shared design system keeps every screen consistent.
The result works for both technical users and people who have never used a monitoring tool before.
Architecture and delivery
The platform runs on AWS. Its main parts are a solar monitoring engine, a performance analytics service, an alert and notification system, user management, and a subscription and billing service.
It connects to solar monitoring providers, notification services, payment systems, analytics tools, and reporting services.
We built the system so it can grow. New users, new device types, and new features can be added without changing the core.
Results
Better visibility. Owners can see their energy production and system health at any time.
Faster fixes. Automatic alerts mean problems are found and solved sooner, so less energy is lost.
Easier maintenance. Clear workflows make it simple to plan and track repair work.
More energy. Performance reports help owners get the most out of their panels.
More engaged users. Simple dashboards and useful alerts encourage people to check in and act early.
Ready for growth. The cloud setup can handle many more systems and features in the future.
Conclusion
Smart Solar shows that good monitoring does not need to be complicated. By combining live data, automatic alerts, and a simple design, the platform helps solar owners avoid downtime and get more value from their investment.
Gunpowder Innovations delivered the product thinking, design, and engineering to make solar monitoring proactive and easy to use.
